THE BOTIOTTE CHAPEL
Presentation
The chapel, located in the middle of the forest of the Charbonniers valley, primarily serves as a refuge where you can warm up and picnic. It was built in 1857 by a few local residents. During the widening of the road, the removal of a huge rock left enough space to build a chapel. A small building was quickly erected, in which a statue of Mary was placed.
The small chapel was extended to its current size in 1873. One of the artisans who contibuted to this extension was a grocer from the Charbonniers, well known to lumberjacks for the small bottles he sold them, hence his nickname "Botiotte", now attached to the chapel dedicated to Notre-Dame-de-Bon-Secours.
The walk to the chapel can be a very pleasant in the silence of the forest, where vestiges of the mines exploited in past centuries for the Dukes of Lorraine still remain.
