The volkstheater Théâtre du peuple
Presentation
The Théâtre du Peuple in Bussang is a unique creative space in France.
Founded in 1895 as a humanist and artistic utopia, this theatre keeps alive the ideal of its founding couple, Maurice and Camille Pottecher, summed up by the motto ‘Through art, for humanity’ inscribed on the pediment of the stage, which background opens onto the forest.
Listed as a historic monument since 1976, the theatre welcomes visitors from all over the world. Training courses, artistic residencies and decentralised tours take place throughout the year.
The ‘summer season’ is the highlight of the year, with two alternating shows, including a production that has always brought together professional and amateur artists. During this period, the theatre can accommodate up to 1,300 spectators per day, thanks to the support of numerous volunteers.
Director Julie Delille has been at the head of this institution since October 2023. At the heart of her project are questions of sensitivity, life and relationships. In this unique place, the concepts of seasonality and territory take on their full meaning. To pursue this bold utopia, it is necessary to work together to promote artistic experimentation, intellectual works and exchange as essential values.
Guided visits are offered at 10:30 a.m. every Sunday outside the summer season (and except November and December), on Tuesdays during french school holidays and on Fridays during the summer season. No booking is required, but please check the visit schedule on the website before you come.
The outdoor site is open to the public. The park and buildings are well worth a visit!
During summer performances, a carpooling module (free and without registration) is offered to facilitate your visit to Bussang: https://www.theatredupeuple.com/infos-pratiques/covoiturage
