New regulations in force
As of November 1, 2021, within the framework of the Mountain Law II and the implementing decree published in the Official Journal on October 18, 2020, winter equipment will be compulsory in certain municipalities in 48 French departments, including the Vosges.
The territory of the Ballons des Hautes-Vosges is part of the area affected by this new regulation.
From November 1, 2021 to March 31, 2022, equipment specific to winter conditions will be required from motorists traveling on our roads, even for passing vehicles and not registered in the departments concerned.
Motorists will have the choice between 2 options:
1. be fitted in the trunk of the vehicle with metal or textile snow chains (the famous "socks") on at least 2 driving wheels
2. be equipped with winter tires or 4-season tires on all 4 wheels.
Cars fitted with studded tires are not affected by this obligation.
In the event of an infringement, a fine of 135 euros will have to be paid and the vehicle may be immobilized.
New road signs will be put in place at the start and end of the affected areas.
Tolerance will be granted in the winter of 2021-2022: any breaches of the obligations mentioned above will not be penalized this winter.
